How did all this madness get started?

Every BAFFLE owner who has ever raised a glass of beer in victory or torn his hair out in anger owes a debt of thanks to Peter's buddy, Rob Genautis.

In the fall of 1991, Rob joined up with the San Francisco Heterosexual Fantasy Football League (known as the "SHUFFLE", even though the letters didn't really fit). Every Sunday night he'd call Peter up, asking how many TDs Jim Kelly had thrown for and how many yards Barry Sanders had rushed for. Peter asked him what it was all about, and Rob gave him the lowdown on fantasy football. Well, Peter was hooked! Not only did he want to join the SHUFFLE, but after Ramesh heard about it, he wanted in on the action too.

Ramesh and Peter joined SHUFFLE for the 1992 season. Their teams were named the Hooters and the Dateless Loners, respectively. The guy who was the Commish and his brother suspiciously got the #1 and #2 spots in the draft. The Dateless Loners got the #5 spot and picked Mark Rypien, who was just coming off a Super Bowl MVP season. The Loners also loaded up heavily on other Redskins' players. Bad move! The `Skins collapsed that season, and the Dateless Loners started off with an 0-4-1 record. The Hooters showed more promise, and led their division going into Week 7. At the midpoint of the season, the Dateless Loners picked up a promising young QB by the name of Brett Favre who was about to make his first NFL start and things started to improve, but it was too late to salvage the season. The bright spot for the Loners was playing spoiler down the stretch and knocking the Hooters out of playoff contention. The rivalry was born!

Aside from their disappointing showing, Peter and Ramesh were growing increasingly suspicious of the Commish and some of his friends -- starting lineups were sometimes not sent out until after the games had started, players that had not been announced as pickups suddenly appeared in the lineups, etc. It seemed collusion was taking place, so Peter and Ramesh decided to leave SHUFFLE and start their own league. The word went out to a bunch of friends, and in the fall of 1993 the Bad-Ass Fantasy Football League (BAFFLE) came into existence.

• Nanda's team changes to the Acme Porkers, and Saeed's team changes briefly to the Babe Magnets and then the Grizzlies ...
• No more tie games -- new tie-breakers ensure a winner in every game ...
• Bonus points are added for 100-yard passing games and 300-yard rushing/receiving games ...
• The Beer Bellies get the first pick of the draft and choose Steve Young ...
• The Hooters temporarily move their home stadium to Penang, and have a tough time defending their title ...
• The (10-4) Bichirs, (9-5) Big Dawgs, and (8-6) Longshots win the Central, Eastern, and Western divisions respectively ...

• The (11-1) Bichirs score the double by finishing with the best record in the regular season and also winning the scoring title. The (9-3) Grizzly Riders and the (9-3) Dragan's Dragons defend their division titles in the East and West respectively, and (8-4) Da Per's goes from worst to first to take the North ...

2007 Season

• Stability returns to the league, with no changes in ownership from the previous season for the first time in 4 years ...
• The draft gets even shorter, with only 37 new players taken, and two teams making no picks at all ... The Hooters take Adrian Peterson with the first pick ... Some owners feel that the league should cap the number of players that can be protected in order to bring more challenge and excitement back to the draft ...
• The last three winless teams -- Bichirs, Dragan's Dragons, and Blue Stars -- all get a win in Week 4 ... The Intense Butchers are last team to stay undefeated as they open up 7-0 ... After Week 7, every team in the Eastern Division is over .500 and every team in the Southern Division is below .500 -- good thing realignment is coming next year!
• Thanks to having most of the Dallas offense plus Randy Moss, the (10-2) Intense Butchers score the double by finishing with the best record in the regular season and also winning the scoring title. The (7-5) Terminators win their first division title, representing the West. The (7-5) Da Per's and (7-5) Bichirs take the North and South respectively.
• The mighty East sends two wild card teams to the tournament, both having better records than any of the other division leaders -- the (9-3) Grizzly Riders and (8-4) Prideless Perverts. Good thing realignment is coming next year!
• In a BAFFLE Bowl upset, the underdog Bichirs defeat the Intense Butchers and bring the Marv Albert trophy back to its original home in the Bay Area.

2008 Season

• The League implemented a limited keeper format, with each team allowed to carry over a maximum of 5 players from the previous season ...
• The Killer Whales take Matt Hasselbeck with the first pick; he has recurring back problems and misses most of the season ...
• The Prideless Perverts and Rusty's Renegades are the last remaining undefeated teams, but it only lasts as far as Week 4 ... Tom Brady gets knocked out for the season in the first week, and the Grizzly Riders start out 0-5 before finally winning in Week 6 ... The Acme Porkers also finally win in Week 6 and there are no more winless teams ...
• The (9-3) Whizzinators score the double by finishing with the best record in the regular season and also winning the scoring title ... The (9-3) Prideless Perverts, (7-5) Rollerballers, (7-5) Blue Stars win the other divisions ... The (8-4) Assassins and (7-5) Hooters take the wild cards, so all teams above .500 make the playoffs.
• The Blue Stars get a huge playoff win by scoring 30 points in the 4th quarter of MNF to beat out the Prideless Perverts for a trip to the Finals, then take a two-touchdown lead into the final MNF, but the Whizzinators ultimately prevail and take Marv home.

2009 Season

• The League adds a new ESPN page allowing for live real-time scoring, last-minute starter changes, and the all-important Smack Board ...
• The Tree Slobs join the League, replacing the Intense Butchers ...
• Da Per's stay loyal to their alma mater and take Beanie Wells with the first pick ...
• By Week 4, there are no winless teams left, as the Acme Porkers, Grizzly Riders, and Prideless Perverts all get off the schneid ... The Rollerballers start out 8-0, tying the Bichirs' record for the best start to a season ...
• The (10-2) Rollerballers go on to score the double by finishing with the best record in the regular season and also winning the scoring title ... The (9-3) Bichirs and (8-4) Blue Stars win their divisions by a comfortable margin ... There is a 4-way tie in the North, with everybody ending up at 7-5. The Tree Slobs win the tiebreakers to take the division, the Beer Bellies and Hooters take the wild cards, and last year's champion Whizzinators just miss out on returning to the dance ...
• The Rollerballers go all the way behind strong performances by Maurice Jones-Drew and Philip Rivers to defeat the Bichirs in the BAFFLE Bowl and take Marv home.

2010 Season

• The Acme Porkers leave the League, and are replaced by the returning Big Dawgs ...
• Rusty's Renegades trade up and take Ryan Mathews with the first pick. It does not do much good as the team starts out 0-5 and is the last team in the league to get a win ...
• Dragan's Dragons start out 8-0, tying the Bichirs' and Rollerballers record for the best start to a season. The team goes on to finish the regular season with the best record in the league at 10-2. The (9-3) Rollerballers also represent the West as a wild card team in the playoffs.
• After trailing in second place in the South all season, the (9-3) Prideless Perverts beat the (8-4) Assassins on the final week to take the division and the scoring title, leaving the Assassins with a wild card spot.
• The (8-4) Hooters take the North, and the (9-3) Grizzly Riders take the East.
• Dragan's Dragons benefit from strong performances by Cowboys Jon Kitna and David Buehler to defeat the Grizzly Riders in the BAFFLE Bowl and win the Marv Albert Trophy for the good people of Cleveland.

2011 Season

• On the flip side, the Dragan's Dragons get off to a bad 0-5 start before finally getting a "W" in Week 6 ...
• The hot teams cool off down the stretch, but manage to hold on and get in to the playoffs. The (8-4) Rusty's Renegades take the West, the (7-5) Assassins take the South, and the (8-4) Grizzly Riders and the (8-4) Beer Bellies win the East and North respectively ...
• The playoff race goes down to the wire as four teams finish at 7-5, but only two get in as the Terminators and Killer Whales take the Wild Card spots ...

2014 Season

• The Assassins, another one of the original 10 founding teams, leave the league. The new team is named the Anarchy. Goodbye Abe, welcome David ...
• Dragan's Dragons take Marshawn Lynch with the first pick in the draft (DD doesn't take Johnny Football until Round 5) ...
• After 4 weeks the Terminators are the only remaining undefeated team and the Tree Slobs are the only remaining winless team, but both streaks ended in Week 5 ...
• After starting 2-2, the Prideless Perverts went on a tear, winning their last 10 regular season games in a row to take the North and shattering all previous league scoring records in the process. The newcomer Anarchy take the South and the Killer Whales take the West at 8-4. Five teams finish at 7-5. It's good enough for the Terminators to take the East, and the Hooters and Rusty's Renegades to get in to the playoffs as wild cards ...
• The scoring title goes to the Prideless Perverts for the third year in a row, and fourth time in the last five years (wow!) ...
• It was the year of the Prideless Perverts, and they did not have a playoff letdown, winning both their playoff games, including a BAFFLE Bowl win over the first-year Anarchy, to make it a dozen wins in a row and cap off a huge season and long-overdue championship. Congratulations!

2015 Season

• There was no turnover in team ownership from the previous season. Good to see everyone back again for more punishment! ...
• Da Per's take Melvin Gordon with the first pick in the draft, but he ends up having a low-key rookie year ...
• Last year, the Tree Slobs started 0-4; this year they turn it completely around and start 5-0 before eventually dropping a game in Week 6 ...
• The Tree Slobs continue their strong run to win the West by 3 games and get the top seed in the playoffs at 10-2. The Terminators go 6-0 in their division, 10-2 overall, win the East by 4 games, and also take the scoring title. Dragan's Dragons also go 6-0 in their division and take the North at 9-3, and the Beer Bellies end a 3-year playoff drought by winning the South at 8-4. The Anarchy and Rollerballers take the wild card spots with 7-5 records on the strength of the points scored tiebreaker.
• Proving once again that you just need to get in, the Anarchy go on a tear in the playoffs, get back to the BAFFLE Bowl again, and win it this time in just their second year in the league! Congratulations!

2016 Season

• For the second year in a row, all the same owners were back for more punishment!
• The Big Dawgs take Zeke Elliott with the first pick in the draft, and he ends up having a great rookie season ...
• No team dominates in the first few weeks of the season. After 3 weeks, the Blue Stars are the only undefeated team, but they go down in Week 4. The Terminators are the last winless team, picking up their first win of the season in Week 5. The lead in all divisions changes hands a few times over the course of the season ...
• The Tree Slobs end the season with the best overall record at 9-3, and also win the scoring title. The Blue Stars, Rusty's Renegades, and Prideless Perverts each improve by 3 or more wins vs. the previous season and win their respective divisions at 8-4. The (8-4) Hooters and (7-5) Anarchy take the wild card spots. All in all, the 6 teams with the best scoring differential and 6 of the overall top 8 scoring teams make the playoffs -- just score, baby!
• In an exciting championship game, the Tree Slobs beat the Blue Stars by 2 points to take home Marv! Congratulations!

2017 Season

• The Whizzinators move out of the league, and new owner renames to team to be Wood's Wusses. Goodbye Brian, welcome Alan ...
• The 25th anniversary draft was held in Vegas, with many of the owners in attendance. The Commish managed to struggle through the draft on a couple of hours sleep and nursing a wicked hangover. That explains some of his picks ...
• The Grizzly Riders take Leonard Fournette with the first pick in the draft. He ends up having a strong rookie season, and together with Tom Brady, leads the Riders back into the playoffs ...
• It was a pretty even start to the season, with no team running away with their division. For the second year in a row, the Blue Stars opened 3-0, but in Week 4, they, together with the previously unbeaten Dragan's Dragons and Da Per's, went down to defeat. Also for the second year in a row, the Terminators opened 0-4, but in Week 5, they, together with the Acme Porkers finally picked up their first win ...
• The Hooters become the first team in league history to score 20,000 points ...
• The (9-3) Dragan's Dragons led the North from start to finish of the regular season, but the Hooters take the South and get the #1 seed by total points scored tiebreaker ... The (8-4) Grizzly Riders go from worst to first and new kid on the block (6-6) Wood's Wusses win the East and West respectively (someone had to win the crappy West) ... The (8-4) Anarchy and (8-4) Big Dawgs take the wild cards, and the Anarchy also win the regular season scoring title ...
• In the 25th season finale Dragan's Dragons beat the Anarchy to take home Marv! Congratulations!

2018 Season

• The Terminators take Saquon Barkley with the first pick in the draft. This helps the team to turn around from last year's bad showing and go from worst to first in the division, and all the way to the BAFFLE Bowl ...
• The Big Dawgs, Prideless Perverts, Terminators, Anarchy, and Hooters all start strong and go on to make the playoffs. The Anarchy open up at 8-0 and look like the team to beat. Rusty's Renegades start out 0-6 before finally getting their only win of the season in Week 7. The Acme Porkers have a strong first half of the season with a 5-1 record at the midpoint, but stumble with a 1-5 finish, enabling the Killer Whales to take the West. On the flip side, Da Per's start out 1-4 but close out the season on a 7-game win streak, just missing out on the playoffs by a tiebreaker. Since we moved to a 12-game season, this is the first time an 8-game winner didn't make the playoffs...
• The Hooters become the first team in league history to notch 200 wins, and the Beer Bellies, Grizzly Riders, Prideless Perverts and Rollerballers join the 20,000 point club ...
• The Prideless Perverts take the scoring title for a record 6th time ...
• In the championship game, the (11-2) Anarchy jump out to a big 43-point lead on TNF and never look back as they go on to defeat the (11-2) Terminators to take home Marv. Congratulations!

2019 Season

• Rusty's Renegades take Josh Jacobs with the first pick in the draft. Good to take a Raiders player on the team's last year in Oakland!
• The Big Dawgs start out at 5-0 and look like the team to beat. They stumble in the second half of the season and finish 7-5, but it's good enough to win the North. The Terminators and Wood's Wusses also start strong and lead the East and West respectively from start to finish of the regular season. The Anarchy take the lead in the South in Week 3 and don't look back the rest of the way. The Tree Slobs finish strong on a 4-game win streak to take the first wild card spot and the Acme Porkers beat out six other 6-6 teams on the tiebreakers to take the final playoff spot, so 3 teams from the West make the playoffs!
• The Terminators win the scoring title for the second time in the last 5 years ...
• The championship game is an all-West affair, with 3 players from the (10-4) Tree Slobs having big double-digit games to defeat the (9-4) Wood's Wusses and take home Marv. Congratulations!

2020 Season

• The whole season was at risk because of COVID. Each week was an adventure, and there were many adjustments that had to be made along the way with a supplemental draft, bigger rosters, and additional IR spots, but we made it work ...
• Da Per's go against expectations in a rookie RB-heavy draft and take Joe Burrow with the first pick. He ends up getting a great QB!
• For the second year in a row, the Big Dawgs start out at 5-0. Wood's Wusses get off to the best overall start at 7-0. On the flip side, the Killer Whales start out 0-7. Both perfect streaks end in Week 8.
• Dragan's Dragons join the 20,000 point club ...
• Anarchy wins the North and #1 playoff seed with the best overall record at 9-3, as well as the scoring title. Wood's Wusses stumble down the stretch with 1-4 finish but hold on to take the East with a 8-4 record. The (7-5) c and (7-5) Grizzly Riders win the South and West respectively. The (8-4) Big Dawgs and the (7-5) Dragan's Dragons take wild card spots. The (6-6) Rusty's Renegades win a 4-way tiebreaker to take the newly-added 7th playoff spot.
• The championship game pits the top two seeds against each other. In a gutsy call, Wood's Wusses start rookie QB Jalen Hurts instead of Drew Brees, and it pays off against the Patrick Mahomes-led Anarchy. Marv was impressed!
• More importantly, we showed that even COVID does not stop BAFFLE!

2021 Season

• Another season was at risk because of COVID. We increased the number of roster spots to help us manage the risk, but it was still a bumpy ride.
• Da Per's gets the first pick two years in a row. Last year's selection was Joe Burrow; this year's was Najee Harris. DP will be a force for years to come!
• Four teams start out 3-0, but after Week 4 nobody was undefeated. Rollerballers start out badly at 0-6 before finally picking up a win halfway through the season. Hang in there!
• The Killer Whales join the 20,000 point club ...
• Prideless Perverts win the West and #1 playoff seed with the best overall record at 12-2. (11-3) Big Dawgs, (10-4) Tree Slobs, and (9-5) Beer Bellies take the other three divisions. Wood's Wusses lose the tiebreaker to Tree Slobs and get the top wild card spot, but win the scoring title by a big margin. Nobody wants to face WW in the playoffs! The (8-6) Blue Stars and Hooters take the other wild card spots. The (8-6) Killer Whales narrowly miss out of the playoffs based on the points scored tiebreaker.
• The #2, #3, and #4 seeds all lose in the first round. So much for higher seeding and home field advantage! The championship game pits the #1 seed Prideless Perverts against the scoring champ Wood's Wusses. On the strength of a 24-point game by Rashaad Penny (yes, you read that right), Wood's Wusses retains the trophy! He knows how to pick players for the big game!

2022 Season

• Peter announces this will be his last season as Commish, and David steps up to take over the role starting next year ...
• We some post-COVID roster adjustments, setting the roster size at 15 (with optional second kicker and defense), and increasing the number of IR spots to 3. All in all, it seemed to work pretty well ...
• Dragan's Dragons take Breece Hall with the first pick. He was having a good season until he got injured, but hopefully will be a good player for years to come ...
• Big Dawgs gets off to a strong start and is undefeated through the first half of the season (7-0) before picking up a loss in Week 8. For the second year in a row, Rollerballers start out badly (0-5) before finally getting a win in Week 6. That team takes a while to get going!
• The Acme Porkers join the 20,000 point club ...
• Rusty's Renegades is the team to beat, going strong all year, with Wood's Wusses in hot pursuit. The Battle for the East goes down to the final week, with (12-2) Rusty's Renegades sweeping (10-4) Wood's Wusses to take the division, the #1 seed, and the scoring title.
• The (9-5) Big Dawgs win the East, the (11-3) Terminators easily win the South (the other three teams in the division all finish 4-10), and the (9-5) Grizzly Riders win the West in a tiebreaker over the Prideless Perverts. The (7-7) Anarchy squeak into the playoffs as the last wild card, edging out the Hooters and Rollerballers (who would have gotten in had the owner not gotten knocked out by a bad case of COVID and failed to pick up a QB for the last game -- the loss in the last week to the crappy Beer Bellies also prevented the latter from the getting the top draft pick next year!).
• The even-numbered seeds all lose in the first round (not sure if that means anything -- probably not). The second round is a low-scoring affair with none of the teams going above 60 points. The high-scoring (almost 80 ppg) Rusty's Renegades pick a bad week to have their worst game of the season and get knocked out. The championship game pits the #7 seed Anarchy against the two-time defending champion Wood's Wusses. With Jalen Hurts on the bench this time, Wood's Wusses goes on to victory in the longest game in BAFFLE history (due to the Damar Hamlin incident), thus getting the first threepeat in BAFFLE history, and earning the right to keep the legendary Marv Albert trophy forever!
